Team Hoyt’s story

This love story began in Winchester , Mass. , 43 years ago, when Rick Was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him Brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

“He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life;” Dick says doctors told him And his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an Institution.”

But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes Followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the Engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was Anything to help the boy communicate. “No way,” Dick says he was told. “There’s nothing going on in his brain.”

“Tell him a joke,” Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a Lot was going on in his brain. Rigged up with a computer that allowed Him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his Head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? “Go Bruins!” And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the School organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, “Dad, I want To do that.”

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described “porker” who never ran More than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he Tried. “Then it was me who was handicapped,” Dick says. “I was sore For two weeks.”

That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, It felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”

And that sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly Shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

“No way,” Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren’t quite a Single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few Years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then They found a way to get into the race Officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the Qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, “Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?”

How’s a guy who never learned to swim and hadn’t ridden a bike since he Was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick Tried.

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii . It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud Getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don’t you Think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you’d do on your own? “No way,” he says. Dick does it purely for “the awesome feeling” he gets seeing Rick with A cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best Time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992–only 35 minutes off the world Record, which, in case you don’t keep track of these things, happens to Be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the Time.

“No question about it,” Rick types. “My dad is the Father of the Century.”

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a Mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries Was 95% clogged. “If you hadn’t been in such great shape,” One doctor told him, “you probably would’ve died 15 years ago.” So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass. , always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father’s Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

“The thing I’d most like,” Rick types, “is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.”

How to cure Gout - Cherries!

My dad had pretty bad gout. What is this thing that causes parts of the body to swell up anyway? Gout is actually a type of arthritis. It occurs when there is an excessive amount of uric acid in the blood, and sometimes crystallizes in different joint areas.

Certain foods may trigger an ‘attack’, and in my dad’s case, it was simply too much peanut or chicken. In an uncle’s case, it was eating duck. So there are different triggers for different people. You can try to identify foods by using a food diary and observing when the swelling starts and all, and try eliminating certain foods and see what starts it.

Then of course, how can one treat it? Most people would go to a doctor, and then the doc would prescribe some medication to ease the pain. That was what my dad did, and all was good and fine until one day I decided to google the medication and find out more about its compounds and how they worked. Seriously, it was bad, you can try doing a search for yourself. The side effects were worse or as bad as the pain from gout. Of course they don’t manifest right away, but I can’t imagine the long term result of taking those meds.

So horrified as I was, I looked for a more natural remedy. And some people in forums mentioned cherries, so I decided to let my dad try them. In any case, no harm if they don’t work, but all the benefits if they do. So my dad tried, and amazingly, he’s been off his meds ever since. There was once or twice when he really overate meat, that he had to take his meds, but other than that, he could take his normal meals and have his peanuts too. And, the cherries tasted good of course :)

The only little problem was that over in my area, we don’t get cherries all the time, and right now actually, the season seems to be off. So the alternative to that was dried cherries. I worried about the effects, but it was as good, just that it has added sugar.

So there, if you are looking for a cheap and effective(and tasty I might add :)) remedy to gout, you have to try cherries!

Stickies

I used to use Post-It lite when I was on the Windows XP OS, but when I switched to Vista because of work, the post-it didn’t work anymore. I didn’t like the notes provided by Windows, so I went to look for an alternative. It took a while, but this one that I found, I really like. I just started using though, so I’m not too sure how good it is yet, but generally seems good right now. Try it out if you need an alternative to post-it notes, both paper and digital. It’s called ’stickies’, and best of all, it’s free. Feel free to make a donation if you think its good!

Here’s a brief writeup on stickies from the website:

What is Stickies?

Stickies is a PC utility I wrote to try to cut down on the number of Post-It® notes I was leaving stuck to my monitor. It is a computerised version of those notes.

The design goal behind Stickies is that the program is small and simple. Stickies will not mess with your system files, or write to the registry. Stickies stores information in a single text-based ini file.

Carnival of Healing #169 - December 20, 2008

Welcome to the December 20, 2008 edition of carnival of healing! The previous carnival was held at Your Joyous Life. The next carnival will be held at Holistic Healing.

First of all, I have to say, there were a lot of entries, and I apologise if not everyone’s is here.

There are basically 3 categories for this carnival. The first, on maintaining and improving health, where we find entries on how to eat healthy and some remedies on how to improve any health issues any of us may have. The second category is on addiction, a small category, but I thought it was important, as many of us face different kinds of addictions everyday. It is not only drug and alcohol many of us abuse, but also food and other stuff.

My new toy: Inkscape!

Haven’t been updating much as I’ve been pretty busy with stuffs. Anyway, wanted to post here about one of the things I’d been busy with! Basically, I’ve recently discovered Inkscape. It’s an awesome Open Source vector graphics editor, and I’ve been playing around with their features. The community has been very generous too, there are loads of tutorials/screencasts that teach a particular feature of Inkscape. Anyway, here’s what I’ve just managed to do….

Ok, that’s not very much, but hey I like the effect, and hopefully I’ll be able to come up with some even more interesting and pretty designs myself soon!
