The power of auto suggestion

Has anyone here heard of autosuggestion? If you had read “think and grow rich”, I am sure you would have been exposed to the idea of autosuggestion. Let me tell you a little story about how it works and the wonders it has done for my life.
Autosuggestion is actually a set of powerful affirmations which you repeat to yourself daily. By doing so, the affirmations seep into your subconscious and your subconscious takes over the tedious job of aligning your daily activities with you goals. Sounds airy fairy isn’t it? Well, it isn’t. Hear me out. I know it is one of those very much talked about topics about how to attain your goals and there probably isn’t much value I can add here except to say from personal experience that it works.
Back in my younger says, I had wanted to be a national soccer player and I modeled myself after Robbie Fowler with his trade mark turn and shoot on sight, I mimicked him to the very end. His moves, his dribbling his opportunistic positioning in the field were all very much a part of my playing style. The thing was, I was a great soccer player but was always put down by family, my parents for one discouraged sportsmanship as they felt that I could go nowhere with it. My older brother who had gotten into the national youth squad was always putting me down and this actually out a dent on my morale and performance in the sport. I was only 13 then, all young and innocent and what I needed was encouragement and always wondered why these people seemed to be putting me down all the time.
It was only in my later years that I found out that it was my parent’s way of loving me but how was I to know that that was love at that point in time. What I needed badly was love and encouragement. I know for a fact that some people need pressure and rebuke to perform but definitely not for me. I overcame that by auto suggestion. It wasn’t even positive thinking. It was just blindly repeating a set phrase over and over again in my mind and it went like that “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler” “I am the best footballer in the world and I can score like Robbie Fowler”.
I know that this sounds silly but it had a profound impact on my skills as a footballer. I would repeat it on the bus, in school, in the toilets when I was taking a shower and I would also write it down that same very line for hours on A4 sized paper. Now I am sure you must be thinking that that is “nuts” Think again. That repeated mode of thinking, saying and writing eventually made me operate at a level that I probably will not operate. These were some of the noticeable changes:
- I started waking up a 3am in the morning to go for my morning jogs to improve my fitness. And this was pretty much automatic
- It was breakfast at 6 am and then off to the fields to do some juggling and shooting practice
- I started to sprint at a quicker pace than most people
- I started to score like Robbie Fowler and I started getting attention from clubs that were recruiting youths in the country
- I became physically stronger and fitter
- My goals became more and more spectacular with bicycle kicks, volleys and what not. Damned I became real good and people recognized me for that, on the streets, I became a feared opponent.
- I averaged 3 goals per match.
Now, remember I was only 13 at that point in time and auto suggestion made a world of difference to me. My performance improved by leaps and bounds and I became obsessed over the sport. That was the first time I was exposed to auto suggestion. This is probably one of the secret weapons that a human being has but it has problems when it comes to implementation because people do not fully embrace it or actually are willing to spend the time to do it.
Then, the 2nd experience came when I was a student and a bad one. I was always playing truant and known among my teachers as a bad boy. Never had a hold on my grades in school and this time it was the Cambridge A levels in London that we are talking about and was a huge leap from secondary school O level stuff. It was daunting because I was not one of them to sit down for hours reading my notes till the wee hours. Ain’t my style. I can’t say that I was the smartest student around as well. I nearly flunked year 1 barely making it before I woke up knowing that if I continued the way I was in year 1 I would have been a tremendous failure.
Now, I am not so sure what really drove me, the fear of failure or letting my parents down but you know what, I did that auto suggestion thing again. I would repeat one phrase 16 hours a day. “I have straight “A’s” “I have straight “A’s” “I have straight “A’s” “I have straight “A’s” Assuming I said it every 5 seconds, I would have repeated that phrase 11520 times a day and I did that for one month straight, talking to myself writing it down, telling it to myself as I comb my hair in the mirror, on the bus etc … It started to work… All of a sudden I was waking up at 5 am in the morning. Sleeping at am in the morning and in between it was nothing but study, study study. In the end, I did it. I got 3 A’s. Wonderful stuff. So simple and amazing and yet true.
Affirmations have been written about so much that I probably do not want to go into the nitty gritty of things. The purpose of this write up is to encourage those people who want to succeed to embark on an affirmation program. Find a buddy to do it with you so that people will not think that you are mad. You heard my story and there are probably many more out there. Affirmation is all about telling or convincing yourself that it is already there, lying to yourself and when you fully believe it, there is no stopping you. When you want something badly, the universe will conspire to give you what you want. I hope that this article has added value to your search for success.
Stumble It!
